How To Water Plants Under Row Covers - Video Demonstration

I have received a few questions from my YouTube subscribers asking the little gardening question: how do you water plants growing under your row covers? The answer is a simple one. Because of how row covers are designed, I can simply spray the water hose through the fabric. You can watch the full video demonstration to see this easy process in action!

Your Garden Can Be Your New 401k Savings Plan

Your Garden Can Be Your New 401k Savings Plan

A 401k is often used as a part of a standard retirement plan. The basic idea is that preselected stocks are chosen by your employer to provide you with options for investing your money. These investments are often matched by the employer, which allows you to end up with “free” money to be used in the later years of your life. Thinking about the 401k retirement plan got me thinking about other ways we invest in our future life. Investing money is simple enough – you put some faith in certain companies, and hope that they perform well over time so you can see a large return on your investment. The best investors usually do their due diligence, and research the stocks they are going to be putting their money into; instead of just picking at random. Most other aspects of life work like this.

Given all the good I have seen from my backyard garden, I would like to propose a revolutionary idea: invest time into your own garden, and reap the benefits over and over again.

Summit Mosquito Dunks for Mosquito Removal from Your Backyard Water Fountain - Review

Summit Mosquito Dunks for Mosquito Removal from Your Backyard Water Fountain - Review

Mosquitoes have a nasty way of turning a backyard water fountain into something less enjoyable. Of course, it should be noted that mosquitoes only really reproduce in standing bodies of water. In our 2nd Backyard Water Fountain Install article, we showcased the installation of a small water fountain in the one of the PSL Team member's backyard. This was meant to replicate the original article How to Build a Backyard Fountain for Your Garden or Patio for Under 65 Dollars. Unfortunately, we waited to long to add a timer mechanism, and without running the fountain 24/7 resulted in a quick rise of mosquito larvae. As we do not particularly care to have mosquitoes breeding in our fountain, we decided to take a step to reduce the population. We found Summit Mosquito Dunks on Amazon, received them within 2 days (thanks to Prime Shipping), and put them to use immediately after receiving in the mail. It's been a few days now, and our mosquito larvae problem is completely eradicated.

One telling sign that a DIY project instructional is useful is if the information provided can be replicated. With Plant-Smart Living, we have set as a goal to provide valuable and useful information that you can apply to your every day life. One of our popular videos and articles has been How To Build a Backyard Fountain for Your Garden or Patio for Under 65 Dollars. As PSL has been created as a team effort, with most of us behind the scenes, we decided to try a little experiment in one of our backyards to put Farmer Fred's instructional to the test.

While most of the team does not have the deep rooted experience of Fred, having worked as an independent contractor for decades, his How To guide provides enough detail for someone (like myself) to take on a first backyard project with great success. I decided to test the waters and install a backyard water fountain for under 200$ dollars. Of course, you may notice the cost is a little bit higher than the original, and the main reason for this is because I opted for a slightly larger plastic fountain base and required a more powerful fountain pump as well. Still, I cannot complain as being able to revolutionize my backyard for 200$ is still quite a feat.

The summer time is my favorite time because my garden is starting to reach its peak growth. I began sowing seeds and transplants early on the the year, and now the fruit of my labor is starting to come into full bloom. Watch the full video above to get a nice overview of the growth I am currently seeing during these early summer months in Pennsylvania - Zone 6.

How to Make a No Cost Mini-Greenhouse

How to Make a No Cost Mini-Greenhouse

A word from the wise: “All things have a cost, but some things cost significantly less than others.”

When I say I will show you how to make a no cost mini-greenhouse, I really mean I will show you how to make the lowest possible cost mini-greenhouse that serves you well by performing its function well.  There is no way to escape costs entirely, but I expect that if you are already living a plant-based lifestyle, you probably have already purchased the necessary products as a part of your weekly grocery shopping trip. Other tools that I use are very standard in any home, so should not lead to a new dent in your wallet forming.

How to Make Alfalfa Tea to Fertilize Your Garden

Alfalfa has many uses in your backyard garden. Alfalfa tea, a rather unique name if I might add and not to be mistaken for the actual tea you can drink, is a simple fertilizer you can make on your own with just some water and alfalfa (and other additives if you so desire). Of course, alfalfa itself comes in many forms, and for this usage you will want to have fine grains that will mix well with water. You can simply buy alfalfa meal, purchase alfalfa pellets and crush them, or buy special Brand Name fertilizers with alfalfa already included. Of course, with the latter option, you will want to review the feel ingredient makeup to verify it adheres to an organic gardening style. For our purposes, we will just stick to simple, organic alfalfa pellets or meal.

How to Build a Backyard Fountain for Your Garden or Patio for Under $65 Dollars

Having a backyard fountain has significantly enhanced my enjoyment of being out in my garden. The sound of the water trickling in my pond is just beautiful to wake up to, and to hear while I working out back.

As you can see in our recent video (above) about this topic, a backyard fountain can really enhance your garden environment as well!

The real appeal of a small fountain in my garden is multi-faceted: I enjoy the aesthetic presentation of the fountain, I like the sound it brings to the environment, and it will bring more birds to bathe in this area of my garden (which is great as I quite enjoy bird watching and taking photographs of them!).
