We live in a world motivated by the attempt to find simple solutions for everyday things. Many memorable inventions are remembered because they solve simple problems – the wheel is memorable because it made transporting goods easier, and eventually progressed to being a major component of automobiles. It’s incredible to think that in the past human kind was mostly limited to walking and carrying things hundreds of miles, but now thanks to this little invention we can drive hundreds of miles in the course of a few hours. In the same way that the wheel was a simple solution, I believe gardens can be simple solutions too.
Summer time is traditionally the "best time" for the backyard garden. It's great for many reasons, such as being able to see real, significant growth of your garden, as well as being able to enjoy the warmer weather that isn't always available during the fall, winter, and even spring months.
Over the course of the year, I had produced quite a few videos showing the early summer update. Given that 2016 is coming to a close, I thought I would put all of these together in one neat article on the Plant-Smart Living website so you can have convenient access to all of these informative videos.
During the height of garden preparation and growing season, Farmer Fred has produced a large number of videos to cover all of the seasonal updates of his backyard garden. These updates are presented to provide some instruction and background into the sowing and harvesting of various fruits and veggies grown in the garden - with some helpful tips for maintaining your own garden, too!
These videos reveal the Early Fall Garden Update 2016 - feel free to watch as many as you'd like to get a real taste for Farmer Fred's garden and advice!
A 401k is often used as a part of a standard retirement plan. The basic idea is that preselected stocks are chosen by your employer to provide you with options for investing your money. These investments are often matched by the employer, which allows you to end up with “free” money to be used in the later years of your life. Thinking about the 401k retirement plan got me thinking about other ways we invest in our future life. Investing money is simple enough – you put some faith in certain companies, and hope that they perform well over time so you can see a large return on your investment. The best investors usually do their due diligence, and research the stocks they are going to be putting their money into; instead of just picking at random. Most other aspects of life work like this.
Given all the good I have seen from my backyard garden, I would like to propose a revolutionary idea: invest time into your own garden, and reap the benefits over and over again.
The summer time is my favorite time because my garden is starting to reach its peak growth. I began sowing seeds and transplants early on the the year, and now the fruit of my labor is starting to come into full bloom. Watch the full video above to get a nice overview of the growth I am currently seeing during these early summer months in Pennsylvania - Zone 6.
My garden has been the main "fuel source" I have used to aid me in my journey towards living a healthier life through a whole foods, plant-based diet. I have been following a plant-based diet for 3 years now, and have no desire to return to my old meat-eating ways. I grow a variety of vegetables ranging from a starchy favorite, the potato, to Swiss chard, kale, broccoli, carrots, and much, much more! The results of this plant-based diet has been amazing in how it has impacted my health and the newly defined "young age" of 60!
One of the most shocking things I encountered when researching more about the things my doctor was recommending I do to lose weight and cut diseases I was faced with out of my life was that he didn't really know what he was talking about when it came to diet. Research has shown that medical doctors do not receive adequate training when it comes to nutrition, which seems absurd to me given that so many illnesses are a direct result of poor nutrition. I ended up doing some research of my own, and decided to take a self-taught journey towards a plant-based diet.
I never thought I would end up being a spokesperson for living a plant-based diet, given my past eating anything I wanted, hunting, and doing other things that would not lend towards being "healthy and wise." When I look at myself in the mirror, and look at past photographs of myself, it's hard to deny that this vegan lifestyle change was the core of what has made me my current healthy self.
I hope you find my video to be interesting and motivating for you. I know that making the switch to a plant-based diet can be a struggle for many, but it will be worth it in the end. You will find that your life will change before your eyes, and a lot quicker than you would think!
