One telling sign that a DIY project instructional is useful is if the information provided can be replicated. With Plant-Smart Living, we have set as a goal to provide valuable and useful information that you can apply to your every day life. One of our popular videos and articles has been How To Build a Backyard Fountain for Your Garden or Patio for Under 65 Dollars. As PSL has been created as a team effort, with most of us behind the scenes, we decided to try a little experiment in one of our backyards to put Farmer Fred's instructional to the test.

While most of the team does not have the deep rooted experience of Fred, having worked as an independent contractor for decades, his How To guide provides enough detail for someone (like myself) to take on a first backyard project with great success. I decided to test the waters and install a backyard water fountain for under 200$ dollars. Of course, you may notice the cost is a little bit higher than the original, and the main reason for this is because I opted for a slightly larger plastic fountain base and required a more powerful fountain pump as well. Still, I cannot complain as being able to revolutionize my backyard for 200$ is still quite a feat.

A word from the wise: “All things have a cost, but some things cost significantly less than others.”

When I say I will show you how to make a no cost mini-greenhouse, I really mean I will show you how to make the lowest possible cost mini-greenhouse that serves you well by performing its function well.  There is no way to escape costs entirely, but I expect that if you are already living a plant-based lifestyle, you probably have already purchased the necessary products as a part of your weekly grocery shopping trip. Other tools that I use are very standard in any home, so should not lead to a new dent in your wallet forming.

How to Make Alfalfa Tea to Fertilize Your Garden

Alfalfa has many uses in your backyard garden. Alfalfa tea, a rather unique name if I might add and not to be mistaken for the actual tea you can drink, is a simple fertilizer you can make on your own with just some water and alfalfa (and other additives if you so desire). Of course, alfalfa itself comes in many forms, and for this usage you will want to have fine grains that will mix well with water. You can simply buy alfalfa meal, purchase alfalfa pellets and crush them, or buy special Brand Name fertilizers with alfalfa already included. Of course, with the latter option, you will want to review the feel ingredient makeup to verify it adheres to an organic gardening style. For our purposes, we will just stick to simple, organic alfalfa pellets or meal.

How to Build a Backyard Fountain for Your Garden or Patio for Under $65 Dollars

Having a backyard fountain has significantly enhanced my enjoyment of being out in my garden. The sound of the water trickling in my pond is just beautiful to wake up to, and to hear while I working out back.

As you can see in our recent video (above) about this topic, a backyard fountain can really enhance your garden environment as well!

The real appeal of a small fountain in my garden is multi-faceted: I enjoy the aesthetic presentation of the fountain, I like the sound it brings to the environment, and it will bring more birds to bathe in this area of my garden (which is great as I quite enjoy bird watching and taking photographs of them!).
