Plant-Smart Living with Farmer Fred has been online for a year now, and has seen a lot of growth in this time. Our Facebook page, where we are most active on social media, has reached over 6,500 "likes," and our YouTube page has just reached over 1,000 subscribers! Reaching these goals has been the result of much hard work and effort by multiple people looking to bring Farmer Fred's vision to life. It has been a challenge at times, but one we hope you find to be beneficial and useful to enhance your life, whether you are working in a garden or just looking for tips to live a healthier, whole foods, plant-based lifestyle.
With the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio fast approaching, it is interesting to hear all of the news stories about the state of this Brazilian seaside city and its ability (or possible inability) to properly house such a large sporting event. From ethical concerns pertaining to personal safety in the city to health concerns to all the hubbub surrounding whether or not Russian Olympians will be allowed to participate due to a doping scandal, it really puts a dent on the Olympics this year, which should really be a time for people of the world to come together to participate, and more likely, if your like me, just observe some of the top athletic competitors around the world together in one central location.
We have received a lot of great feedback on our article 100 Vegan Celebrities to Inspire Your Plant-Based Journey! The main intention of this piece was to showcase a diverse mix of celebrity figures that adopted a vegan diet, and who were doing something good with their position of fame. However, It has been brought to my attention through social media and Reddit that a few of the people on the list are no longer vegan. It is quite a shame to hear this given the amount of time and energy spent creating this piece of written content. I thought it would be a useful thing, then, to look into some of the specific celebrities noted as not being vegan celebrities anymore and examine why this confusion is apparently pervasive around the internet. I hope we can have an honest discourse on these former vegan celebrities!
Former President of the United States Bill Clinton is a critical starting point when it comes to examining these ex-vegan celebs. Afterall, his position of power is difficult to come by, and to have had him speak positively regarding a vegan diet for many years may have been quite impactful on many lives. Unfortunately, there appears to be much dishonesty in many vegan media outlets regarding Bill Clinton's status as a vegan. Whether this is intentional or unintentional, it is difficult to judge, as I myself know how difficult finding the real facts online can be.
I know first-hand how a whole foods, plant-based diet can impact physical health. I’ve seen the drastic changes in my body over the course of the last few years. Losing over 65 pounds and reclaiming my health can do that to a person. However, something occasionally overlooked when we discuss the benefits of this lifestyle is how it can positively impact the part of us that no one else can see or experience – our mental well-being.
Some of the most significant health conditions that keep us down are psychological. Depression and anxiety are just two of many diseases that function on a continuum (or spectrum). They range from a relatively normal state (after all, everyone should feel anxiety and depression from time to time) to serious health conditions that can have significantly negative repercussions. As is often advised by good medical doctors, nutritionists, and your average person with some common sense, a healthy diet can greatly impact both the mind and body for the better.

I wanted to wish you all a Happy Independence Day! This is a day that sits close to my heart for two major reasons:
- My son-in-law (who works tirelessly to help me with getting content put online for Plant-Smart Living) serves actively in the US military and has served multiple tours overseas and domestically.
- Independence Day serves as a reflection of the fact that we are "free." This freedom, of course, is representative of freedom from the chains of oppressive dictators and rulers. However, I think this translates to personal freedom, which is a part of the plant-based message we are consistently looking to spread.
Throughout June 2016, Plant-Smart Living held a month long giveaway comprised of almost $300 dollars worth of plant-based, vegan book resources and a PSL T-Shirt. We received many entries (1,279 to be exact!) and saw large growth in our community, and more importantly, our community interaction with us on social media, YouTube, and on our website here. This success would have been impossible without the input and motivation put forth by many of you who entered the giveaway.
Have you ever thought it could be healthy to overeat?
It is a common struggle for many. Overindulging in food may come easily for you, and may have heavily contributed to you packing on a few more pounds than you would have liked. You do not have to carry around this extra weight for the rest of your life, nor do you have to suffer with the poor health quality that tends to come with being very overweight or obese. As you may well know, there are two primary factors that impact your weight: the food you eat and your level of physical activity. A whole foods, plant-based diet holds the solution to your weight loss. This vegan weight mitigating method is simple, and allows you to eat as much as you please, so long as you are eating the healthy plant-based foods required.
