12 Easy Snacks that are McDougall Diet Approved to Take to Work

Going into the office can provide a number of temptations. Some days your boss might bring in donuts or other sugary snacks, or you might even get stuck trying to figure out how not to seem "weird" at a pizza party. We know it's all meant to be good-natured and fun, but it can be a real challenge for those trying to get their health under control.

If the food that is available doesn't seem like it would be compliant with your diet, it is sometimes best to come prepared. Below are 12 easy snacks that are McDougall Diet compliant - courtesy of the McDougall Friend's Facebook group.

Dr. McDougall's 10 Diet-Induced Changes That Slow and Reverse Cancer

Dr. McDougall's 10 Diet-Induced Changes That Slow and Reverse Cancer

While doing some reading on Dr. John McDougall's website, I came across a list of 10 recommended dietary changes that can help to reduce cancer risk and reverse cancer in patients already feeling the effects. This is some seriously powerful stuff, and goes to show how a whole foods, plant-based diet can really have a positive impact on our bodies. In this specific case, reducing the risk of cancer (or effects of cancer) is powerful given how many of us have lost important people in our lives to the cancer battle. It is great to know that it is, for many, avoidable and treatable by changing our dietary core.

Following the diet laid out by Dr. John McDougall in The Starch Solution can be difficult for many - in part because it is so different from the Standard American Diet. Fortunately, there are many great online resources and communities that can help make a world of difference. One such community is the McDougall Friend's Group on Facebook that I frequent.

If you are looking to get input on joining the plant-based lifestyle, or just need some help getting a firmer grip on your current WFPB diet, I would highly recommend joining this group and chiming in on some of the conversations.

Disease is Not in Your Genes!

Disease is Not in Your Genes!

"Genetics" have become a scapegoat for all sorts of diseases - obesity, cardiovascular problems, digestive problems, allergies, arthritis - basically, if you can think of a disease, it is likely you have heard someone refer to it having a genetic link. Genes are really just the coding of our individual bodies. Of course, some of this information is passed from generation-to-generation. This is obvious when comparing a newborn child to his/her parents.

While it is possible to share some of this "code" for diseases, in a vast majority of cases your genes do not define your performance in life. Just because your father and your grandfather have had histories of heart disease, does not mean you have to carry the torch like an Olympian. Most illnesses that can be chalked up to genes and "cured" by a doctors prescription are entirely avoidable through simple lifestyle changes.

100 Vegan Celebrities to Inspire Your Plant-Based Journey!

100 Vegan Celebrities to Inspire Your Plant-Based Journey!

Celebrities have a lot of fame and power, which can be used to better the world or make it worse. I have come to find that there are quite a few celebrities that have a vegan diet, and a lifestyle that supports sustainability, animal rights, better ethical treatment of workers, and so on. Some celebrities are passively vegan – that is, they are not celebrities because of their vegan views, but became a celebrity as a result of something else like their music or roles in the film industry. Others are active vegan celebrities whose claim to fame is adding something of value to the conversation of a plant-based diet and lifestyle.

From Fat and Sick to Healthy and Trim – Personal Success Story

I received a comment from a user who has enjoyed the videos of Plant-Smart Living with Farmer Fred asking “What changes did you see and how long did it take to see them?” as it pertains to my transition to a whole foods, plant-based diet a few years ago. This is a question I see often, and relates directly to my personal story of change both in terms of my diet and in terms of my lifestyle. I put together the video (seen above) to give a detailed response on this subject.

My focus when entering into a plant-based lifestyle was on “regaining and restoring” my health. The weight loss and overcoming of specific diseases were an added bonus. I was raised on the Standard American Diet comprised heavily of meat, dairy, cheese, fatty and processed foods. For many years of my life, I knew of no other way to live. I’ve heard of many diets, but all of them just seemed to regurgitate the same headlines.

The Starch-Plus Diet by Will Kriski - Book Review

The Starch-Plus Diet by Will Kriski - Book Review

The Starch-Plus Diet a great book created by Will Kriski, as a follow up to his first book The Potato Strong Recipe Guide. Will (you may know him just as Potato Strong) has been an excellent resource for us here at Plant-Smart Living, and this book is an extension of the knowledge he has passed on to us as we have come to know each other through email, Facebook, and phone conversations. As a result of this, of course there is some bias in my "review" of his book, but let me just say that I make an effort to only recommend products I personally enjoy and get something out of, and The Starch-Plus Diet is one of those things!

The Potato Strong Recipe Guide by Will Kriski - Book Review

We started Plant-Smart Living in 2015, and early into our exploration of social media and other people living a plant-based lifestyle and talking about it online, we stumbled upon Potato Strong. I was immediately interested in what it meant to be "potato strong," and could quickly tell that Will was discussing some things close to my own lifestyle as a result of our shared appreciation for Dr. McDougall's The Starch Solution. While that book has been very influential for myself and Will, it has only served as a starting point by which we have developed our own takes on what it means to live a plant-based lifestyle.
