Hiking at Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona

While in Tucson, Arizona, some of the PSL team took a little hike at Saguaro National Park. It is a unique desert landscape that has visitors driving a one-way 7 mile loop with occasional stop offs to take in the views and get some nice photos. The time there was made unique as we could see a looming storm in the distance towards the end of the time there. It made for some seriously atmospheric photography! I hope you enjoy!

A Little Visit to Picacho Peak State Park in Arizona

A Little Visit to Picacho Peak State Park in Arizona

Recently a member of the Plant-Smart Living team went out to Arizona to visit family for the Christmas holiday. They landed in Phoenix, Arizona and proceeded to drive 2 hours south to Tucson. Along the way, they stopped off a the notable half-way point that is Picacho Peak State Park. It becomes visible in the distance nearly 30 minutes before arrival, and provides some really great views that we are not all that accustomed to in Pennsylvania. I hope you enjoy some of these beautiful photos!

Plant-Smart Living's New Year's Resolution for 2017

Plant-Smart Living's New Year's Resolution for 2017

With the new year coming to greet us shortly, and as we become increasingly reflective on both the good and bad that came with 2016, I thought I would share some thoughts on the resolution for Plant-Smart Living for the coming year - 2017.

It is a common theme we all share - to try and make changes to our lives as we roll into a new year, as for many it gives us the sense that we have a "clean start" (so to speak). For some, the changes may be small - maybe you are already on a healthier road. For others, the resolutions might be far more significant - perhaps you are at your wits end and need a major change in your life.

For Plant-Smart Living and myself, I wish you all a Happy New Year, and would like to encourage you to set goals to reach a healthier state of mind and body.

30 Ways How You can Create a Better You in 2017

30 Ways How You can Create a Better You in 2017

Most of us have a basic desire to become "better" with the New Year. It's really the basis of so many people around the world making New Year's resolutions, and with the change of the year from 2016 to 2017, the same thing will happen as has happened for centuries. We all hope to shed some of the tough times and bad experiences of the past year, and look forward to making changes in the new one. You probably have a list of things you'd like to improve on - as do I!

Creating a better you in the new year is entirely possible if you can really commit to making changes. It can be difficult, but if you stick with it, you may find your entire life has changed for the better!

What follows are 30 ways to create a better you as you head out into the new year. Keep in mind, while not all of these may be relative to you, they are some great suggestions to get you going in the right direction.

10 Challenges of a Plant-Based Diet

10 Challenges of a Plant-Based Diet

Let us face the facts - changing your diet can be tough. Just like moving across country to a new, foreign city, can cause some anxiety and pose challenges - both expected and unexpected - changing to a plant-based diet can be as equally frustrating.

Fortunately, much like the analogy of someone moving across country, we have to keep in mind all of the positives that come from such a move - expanded horizons, potential for better jobs, ability to experience new things, and the ability to feel like you are making the best out of your life (just to name a few). Adopting a plant-based diet provides similar results - you can experiment with new foods, expand your taste pallet, and reap positive nutritional benefits that impact your body and mind for years to come.

Sometimes in all of the excitement to share what the plant-based diet is all about with others, we can forget how difficult it can be at times to make this change. Much of this is personal as I only recently (in the past few years) have been adhering to a plant-based diet - for the majority of my life, the "Standard American Diet" was par for the course.

Top 18 Stereotypes, Misconceptions, and Myths About Vegans

Top 18 Stereotypes, Misconceptions, and Myths About Vegans

Vegans sometimes get a bad rep - and sometimes they happen to bring it upon themselves. For one reason or another, stereotypes have really started to dictate how your average person views the vegan lifestyle - and they can be powerful. For vegans who don't fit the mold, it can be increasingly difficult to have a conversation about veganism, healthy eating, and lifestyle politics (such as environment preservation and animal cruelty).

12 Mistakes Everyone Makes When Changing Their Diet

12 Mistakes Everyone Makes When Changing Their Diet

I came across a great little story about William the Conqueror, an 11th century military commander and king that is known for bringing England under Norman reign during this time period, and his unique creation of what is often considered "the first fad diet." Apparently, he faced some weight loss struggles like the best of us, and decided to take matters into his own hands - in the form of a liquid, alcohol-based, diet. Inevitably, practical starvation led to some weight loss, but it had other health consequences. Supposedly, when he got on his horse one day, he didn't have the strength to stay on and fell off - and soon died from complications of the fall

This little snippet of history is special because it shows us a few things - how human beings have used diets in one way or another to try and resolve some of our physical (and probably mental) challenges, and not always to great success. To some extent, there was some degree of experimentation required in the early days of dieting, after all these diets had no real potential to be grounded in the scientific method.

Things are different today, though, and if you do your research you can find a diet that can benefit your health, help you shed pounds, and still be healthy at the end of the day - instead of ready to fall off your proverbial horse!
